the story,

Behind this piece

Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aari, that Kashmiri craftsmen have wielded for centuries across the Vale. Unlike the counted-thread precision of sozni work, aari moves fluidly across woollen ground cloth, allowing the needle to trace organic, unbroken lines of chain stitch. The result is embroidery with genuine dimension and spring. Floral and paisley motifs here follow a vocabulary refined under Mughal patronage and carried forward by the karigars of Srinagar's old city quarters. Magenta, a colour long associated with Kashmiri festivity, saturates the wool and makes every stitched petal luminous against winter light.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this jacket over a ivory or off-white churidar kurta set for a winter festive gathering, letting the magenta do all the speaking. For a sharper register, layer it over slim black trousers and a silk turtleneck, finishing with oxidised silver jhumkas and kolhapuri block-heeled sandals. On cooler evenings abroad, it reads beautifully over a dark silk midi dress with pointed-toe ankle boots and a single gold kada at the wrist. In every combination, resist over-accessorising; the aari embroidery is itself the jewellery.

to last,

Fabric & care

Wool is a resilient but sensitive fibre that responds poorly to heat and agitation. Dry-clean this jacket whenever possible to preserve the integrity of the aari chain-stitch work. If hand-washing is necessary, use cold water and a wool-specific mild detergent, working with the gentlest of pressure and never wringing or twisting the fabric. Lay flat on a clean towel to dry, away from direct sunlight, which fades magenta tones. Store folded, never hung, wrapped in a soft muslin cloth with cedar blocks nearby to discourage moths. Properly maintained, this piece will last decades.
