Behind this piece
Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aari, that Kashmiri craftsmen have wielded for centuries across the valleys of Srinagar and Baramulla. Traditionally reserved for shawls and phirans, this technique involves pulling thread loops through fabric from below, building florals with a density and rhythm no machine can replicate. On this honey-peach crepe robe, the same unhurried hand traces flowers at the hem and cuffs, each petal a small argument for slowness. The dori at the waist is not decorative afterthought; it is structure, proportion, and the final full stop of the maker's intention.
How to style
Wear it over a ivory silk slip dress for a destination wedding welcome dinner, cinched at the waist with the dori left in a soft bow. For a morning at leisure, layer it over wide-leg ivory palazzos and flat Kolhapuri chappals in tan leather. At a literary festival or gallery opening, pair it with straight-cut cigarette trousers in ivory silk and low block-heeled mules, adding a single strand of freshwater pearls at the collar. In each case, keep jewellery restrained: the embroidery has already said everything it needs to say.
Fabric & care
Crepe is woven with high-twist yarns that give it its characteristic drape; that same twist means it resists wrinkles but dislikes aggressive handling. Hand-wash in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, and never wring or twist the fabric. Rinse gently, roll in a clean cotton towel to remove excess water, then dry flat in shade to preserve the peach tone. Iron on the reverse side at a low setting while slightly damp. Store folded in a muslin bag, away from direct light, to keep both the crepe and the Aari threads true.
