the story,

Behind this piece

Kutch, the salt-white desert district of Gujarat, has long been a crucible of textile ingenuity. The embroidery traditions here, practised across communities including the Rabari and Ahir, are among the most visually dense in the subcontinent, characterised by mirror work, chain stitch, and bold geometric animal motifs. The elephant, a recurring figure in Kutchi needlework, carries ceremonial weight, appearing on ceremonial textiles, dowry pieces, and festival hangings for generations. This cotton tote translates that vocabulary into an everyday object, made to order so each piece arrives unhurried, carrying the considered attention that the tradition demands.

to wear it,

How to style

Carry this tote against a hand-block-printed cotton kurta in ivory or indigo for a considered daytime look at a craft market or heritage exhibition. The Barbados Cherry or Winery colourways pair beautifully with deep-toned Maheshwari silk dupattas and oxidised silver earrings from Rajasthan. For diaspora dressing, pair the Mistletoe or Turf Green with a linen co-ord set and kolhapuri sandals at a weekend brunch or cultural fair. The Emboldened colourway sits well against neutral handloom cotton separates, letting the elephant motif speak without competition from a louder garment.

to last,

Fabric & care

Cotton breathes generously but rewards gentle handling. Hand wash in cool water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, keeping the embroidered face away from abrasive surfaces. Do not wring or twist; press out excess water gently and dry flat in shade to preserve both the cotton weave and any surface embroidery. Avoid prolonged sun exposure, which can fade the richer colourways such as Winery and Barbados Cherry over time. Store flat or loosely rolled in a breathable muslin bag. With this care, the bag will carry its colour and structure across years of daily use.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
