the story,

Behind this piece

Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aari, that Kashmiri craftsmen have wielded for centuries across the valley's workshops and family courtyards. Rooted in the Mughal patronage of the sixteenth century, the craft flourished in Srinagar and its surrounding townships, where artisans learned to coax silk and metallic threads into botanical fantasies: climbing vines, unfurling blossoms, and tendrilled leaves. Here, that centuries-old vocabulary is rendered in fine chain stitch across fluid satin, the dual-colour ground giving the floral vine a luminous, almost painterly depth that no loom alone could achieve.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear the kaftan unbelted to a Diwali gathering, letting the embroidered vine move freely, grounded by gold kolhapuri heels and a single polki choker. For a destination wedding rehearsal, cinch it at the waist with a thin zari belt and carry a minaudière. Diaspora evenings call for layering a fine ivory organza jacket over the kaftan, pairing it with oxidised silver jhumkas and pointed mules in nude suede. In each case, keep the wrist bare; the embroidery is jewellery enough and does not require competition from stacked bangles.

to last,

Fabric & care

Satin woven from polyester or silk-blend fibres is best handled with restraint. Hand wash in cool water using a gentle, pH-neutral detergent, and never wring or twist the fabric. Rinse thoroughly, then roll the kaftan in a clean cotton towel to absorb excess water before laying it flat to dry, away from direct sunlight, which weakens the sheen over time. Iron on a low setting with a pressing cloth placed over the embroidered sections to protect the Aari thread work. Store folded in a breathable muslin bag, never compressed beneath heavier garments.
