Description

There are anklets that chime, and there are anklets that announce. This bridal ghungroo anklet belongs to the second kind. Cast in brass and finished to a warm, burnished tone, the pair carries a chain of miniature ghungroos, each one a small brass bell that catches movement and returns it as sound. Set along the upper register are uncut Polki stones, held in place by the open-backed foil setting that has distinguished Rajasthani jewellery for centuries. The Polki here is not the grand solitaire of a necklace but something quieter: a row of milky, naturally faceted stones whose light shifts with every step. The lacquer work that fills the inner setting is equally characteristic of Jaipur's hereditary karigars, who use it to seal and steady each stone while adding a depth of colour beneath. The pair weighs eighty-three grams together, and each anklet measures one inch (approximately 2.5 cm) in breadth and five and a half inches (approximately 14 cm) in length, offering a silhouette that is generous without being unwieldy. Worn at a wedding ceremony, they complement a red or ivory silk lehenga and will be heard before they are seen, marking the rhythm of the bride's walk. At a mehendi or sangeet, they pair equally well with heavily embroidered salwar suits in ochre or deep green. The free-size form suits most adult ankles. The brass base ensures the anklet holds its shape, and the ghungroos are fixed firmly enough for all-day wear.
