Behind this piece
Zari embroidery on net is a discipline that finds its most refined expression in the ateliers of Surat and the older karkhanas of Varanasi, where metallic thread has been coaxed into ornamental borders for bridal and ceremonial wear for centuries. This piece unites two traditions: the gossamer openwork of net fabric and the disciplined geometry of zari stitching, finished with sequins that catch light at every angle. The gold-with-pink colourway speaks to a Mughal-era sensibility, while the silver reads entirely contemporary. Both carry the weight of a craft that has dressed royalty and adorned ritual.
How to style
Attach the gold-with-pink border to the hem of an ivory or blush silk lehenga for a sangeet or engagement ceremony, and pair with polki kundan earrings and strappy heels in nude. For a saree, stitch it along the pallu edge of a tissue or georgette drape to create a custom statement without altering the weave. The silver colourway works beautifully on a white or charcoal anarkali for a winter reception, balanced with oxidised silver jhumkas and pointed khussa flats. Either colourway elevates a plain dupatta when sewn along its length.
Fabric & care
Net is a delicate, open-weave fabric and the zari thread oxidises with moisture and friction. Dry-clean only; never submerge in water. Store flat or loosely rolled in a muslin cloth, away from direct sunlight, which dulls metallic thread over time. Avoid folding along the sequinned areas, as crease pressure can loosen the attachments. Keep mothballs at a distance, as their vapour corrodes zari. When attaching to a garment, use a fine needle and match thread to avoid straining the net. Handled with care, this border will retain its lustre across many seasons of wear.
