about the piece,

Description

Where metal meets thread, Kolkata's needle-workers have long composed their most patient arguments in gold. This border carries the full weight of the city's zardozi inheritance, a tradition that travelled from Mughal ateliers into the by-lanes of north Kolkata and never entirely left. Worked in art silk, the ground fabric offers a luminous base against which the cutwork apertures breathe, framing the threadwork with quiet precision. The interplay of raised metallic embroidery and delicate open-cut geometry is characteristic of the Bengal school of zardozi, where restraint and opulence are held in careful balance. Occasion-dressing in India rarely asks for understatement, yet this border manages to suggest grandeur without announcing it, making it equally suited to a festival ensemble and a ceremonial occasion that calls for considered elegance. Sew it along the hem of a raw silk saree or the dupatta edge of a sharara set to anchor the whole look with a stripe of considered craftsmanship. It reads with particular grace against ivory, deep burgundy, or the soft ochres of a Benarasi ground fabric.

the story,

Behind this piece

Zardozi, from the Persian words for gold and needlework, arrived in India through Mughal courts and took deep root in Bengal's craft quarters. Kolkata's karigars carry this tradition with particular finesse, combining the raised metal embroidery with cutwork, a technique that demands precision at every pierced interval. The addition of threadwork here softens the metallic drama, lending the border a layered character rare in contemporary trim. Art silk carries the zardozi's weight without the stiffness of heavier grounds, allowing the border to drape with the fabric it eventually adorns.

to wear it,

How to style

Stitch this border along the hem of an ivory or dusty-rose georgette saree for a Durga Puja evening that requires neither excess nor understatement. On a kurta's neckline and cuffs, it transforms a simple cotton ensemble into festive occasion wear appropriate for a mehendi or engagement lunch. Pair with polki silver jhumkas and kolhapuri heels in tan for a look that feels rooted yet composed. The cutwork detail also works beautifully applied to the front panel of a sheer organza dupatta draped across a bridal outfit's shoulder.

to last,

Fabric & care

Art silk is delicate and benefits from careful handling. Dry clean wherever possible to preserve the zardozi's structure and the cutwork's open intervals. If hand washing is necessary, use cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent and never wring or twist the border. Lay it flat on a clean towel to dry in shade, away from direct sunlight, which can fade the thread colours over time. Store rolled rather than folded to prevent crease lines forming at the cutwork sections. Keep in a breathable muslin pouch, away from moisture and metal contact.

Each piece is hand-picked from artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Some are handloomed on traditional pit looms, others use block-printing, hand-embroidery, or heritage techniques passed down through generations. Small irregularities are part of the character — not a defect.
