the story,

Behind this piece

Zardozi, from the Persian words for gold and needlework, arrived in India through Mughal courts and took deep root in Bengal's craft quarters. Kolkata's karigars carry this tradition with particular finesse, combining the raised metal embroidery with cutwork, a technique that demands precision at every pierced interval. The addition of threadwork here softens the metallic drama, lending the border a layered character rare in contemporary trim. Art silk carries the zardozi's weight without the stiffness of heavier grounds, allowing the border to drape with the fabric it eventually adorns.

to wear it,

How to style

Stitch this border along the hem of an ivory or dusty-rose georgette saree for a Durga Puja evening that requires neither excess nor understatement. On a kurta's neckline and cuffs, it transforms a simple cotton ensemble into festive occasion wear appropriate for a mehendi or engagement lunch. Pair with polki silver jhumkas and kolhapuri heels in tan for a look that feels rooted yet composed. The cutwork detail also works beautifully applied to the front panel of a sheer organza dupatta draped across a bridal outfit's shoulder.

to last,

Fabric & care

Art silk is delicate and benefits from careful handling. Dry clean wherever possible to preserve the zardozi's structure and the cutwork's open intervals. If hand washing is necessary, use cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent and never wring or twist the border. Lay it flat on a clean towel to dry in shade, away from direct sunlight, which can fade the thread colours over time. Store rolled rather than folded to prevent crease lines forming at the cutwork sections. Keep in a breathable muslin pouch, away from moisture and metal contact.
