Zardosi Horse Cart Patch with Embellished Sequins
Gentle hand-wash separately in cold water with a mild detergent. Avoid soaking. Iron on medium heat while slightly damp.
Behind this piece
Zardosi is among the oldest metal-thread embroideries practised on the subcontinent, with roots tracing back to Mughal court ateliers in Lucknow and Agur. The craft involves coiling fine metallic threads, sequins, and wire onto a taut fabric ground, traditionally velvet or silk, though this patch rests on cambric for a lighter hand. The horse cart motif carries a quietly narrative quality, drawn from folk imagery long beloved in North Indian decorative arts. Each sequin is set individually, catching light at its own angle, giving the composition a depth that printed or woven ornament simply cannot replicate.
How to style
Anchor this patch at the hemline of an ivory chanderi kurta for a Diwali gathering, letting the cayenne and tropical peach tones do the festive work without overpowering the fabric. On bridal occasions, place it at the shoulder of a raw-silk blouse and pair with uncut diamond or polki drops. For a contemporary register, apply it to the breast pocket of a structured cream linen blazer worn over cigarette trousers. In each case, keep footwear simple, a block-heeled kolhapuri or a plain pointed-toe mule, so the embroidery commands full attention.
Fabric & care
Cambric is a plain-woven cotton with a close weave that holds zardosi work reasonably well, but the metallic threads and sequins are vulnerable to moisture and friction. Do not machine-wash or soak. Spot-clean gently with a barely damp muslin cloth and allow to air-dry flat, away from direct sunlight, which fades the jelly bean and cayenne tones. Store the patch face-up between two sheets of acid-free tissue inside a cool, dry drawer. Never fold along the embroidered area. Pressed lightly under a clean cloth with a cool iron on the reverse, the cambric will remain smooth for years.
