the story,

Behind this piece

Kantha is one of Bengal's oldest narrative traditions, born from the practice of layering worn saris into quilted cloth and stitching them back to life with running thread. On this stole, that same spirit is translated onto a cotton-semi silk ground the colour of turmeric left in afternoon light. The yellow ochre base is not incidental; it carries the warmth of mustard fields across the Bengal countryside. The multicoloured embroidery moves across the surface in the characteristic Kantha idiom: dense, rhythmic, almost meditative in its repetition. Each motif is a sentence in a language woven before print existed.

to wear it,

How to style

Drape this stole loosely over a white or ivory kurta for a gallery opening or literary evening, letting the ochre speak without competition. For a winter wedding, layer it across the shoulders of a deep teal or burgundy silk kurta-set and anchor the look with oxidised silver earrings. On quieter days, knot it at the neck over a linen shift dress and pair with kolhapuris in tan leather. The multicoloured embroidery holds its own against solid separates but softens beautifully when worn alongside handloom weaves in undyed or natural tones.

to last,

Fabric & care

The cotton-semi silk blend requires gentle handling to preserve both the structural silk threads and the Kantha embroidery above them. Hand wash separately in cool water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Avoid soaking beyond three minutes. Do not wring; press gently between two dry towels to remove excess water. Dry flat in shade to prevent the silk component from losing its lustre. Iron on a low-to-medium setting on the reverse side, placing a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the embroidery. Store folded in muslin, away from direct light.
