Behind this piece
In the valley of Kashmir, where winter light falls low and slow across the Jhelum, the aari needle has traced its fine, looping path through wool for centuries. Aari embroidery, worked with a hooked awl, allows the craftsman to build dense, rhythmic jaal patterns across a surface with a precision that the flat needle cannot match. The paisley, or keri, is Kashmir's defining motif, borrowed from Mughal garden manuscripts and naturalised over generations into something entirely its own. This stole carries that lineage, stitch by patient stitch, across pure Kashmiri wool.
How to style
Draped loosely over a charcoal or ivory kurta, this stole becomes the quiet centrepiece of a winter gathering. For an evening occasion, layer it over a silk anarkali in a tonal shade, and let the paisley jaal speak against the sheen. A third reading: fold it lengthwise over a tailored coat for a contemporary sensibility, and ground the look with kolhapuri block heels or clean leather mules. In each case, keep jewellery restrained, perhaps a single gold jhumka or slim bangles, so the embroidery holds the eye undivided.
Fabric & care
Pure wool breathes and holds warmth, but it requires considered handling. Hand wash this stole in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, never wringing or twisting the fabric. Press out excess water gently between two clean towels and dry flat in shade, away from direct heat or sunlight. Do not hang wet, as wool stretches under its own weight. Store folded, not on a hanger, within a breathable cotton bag. Place cedar blocks nearby to discourage moths. With this level of care, the wool and the embroidery will remain intact for many seasons of wearing.
