the story,

Behind this piece

Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aar, that Kashmiri craftsmen have wielded for centuries across the Vale. Unlike the counted-thread precision of sozni, aari work moves freely across the surface, building dense floral and paisley motifs with a fluid, almost painted quality. On this long jacket, the craft appears in restrained white threadwork against charcoal wool, a pairing that feels quietly monumental. The woollen base itself honours Kashmir's cold-climate textile tradition, where warmth and beauty have never been considered separate concerns. This is embroidery as architectural detail, not decoration.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this jacket over a cream silk kurta and straight ivory palazzos for an autumn wedding guest look; finish with oxidised silver jhumkas and tan kolhapuris. For a city afternoon, layer it over a fine white cotton shirt tucked into tapered black trousers, letting the jacket's length do the talking. On cooler evenings, pair it with a charcoal cashmere turtleneck and wide-leg trousers in camel, adding a single strand of freshwater pearls. The jacket's graphic black-and-white palette absorbs colour from its companions without ever losing its own composure.

to last,

Fabric & care

Wool breathes but punishes neglect. Dry-clean this jacket when a full wash is necessary, as machine agitation will felt and shrink the fibres irreversibly. For minor refreshing, steam gently from a distance without pressing the iron directly onto the aari embroidery, which can flatten under direct heat. Store folded, never hung, to prevent shoulder distortion, with a cedar block nearby to deter moths. Air the jacket between wearings rather than cleaning after each use. Treated with patience, fine Kashmiri wool deepens in character across years of careful wear.
