Behind this piece
Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aari, which Kashmir's craftsmen have wielded for centuries across the valleys of Srinagar and Baramulla. Unlike the flat, counted-thread precision of sozni, aari work moves in a continuous chain stitch that builds dense, dimensional blooms from a single flowing thread. The flowers here are not decorative motifs applied as afterthought; they are the grammar of a living textile tradition, passed through ustads to apprentices across generations. Wool from the Kashmir valley carries warmth without weight, and beneath these embroidered gardens, it remains exactly itself: honest, enduring, quietly beautiful.
How to style
Drape the Alpine Green across a cream silk kurta set for a winter Diwali gathering, anchoring the look with oxidised silver jhumkas and kolhapuris in tan. The Ivory and Winter White read as luminous against deep-toned anarkalis or sharara sets for a mehendi or sangeet. For quieter occasions, fold the Pirate Black lengthwise over a camel-coloured cashmere sweater and slim trousers, finishing with gold studs and leather ankle boots. All four colourways carry the embroidery with equal authority; the choice of ground simply shifts the mood from festive warmth to spare, considered elegance.
Fabric & care
Wool breathes best when rested. Hand-wash in cool water with a wool-specific or mild pH-neutral soap, never twisting or wringing the fabric. Support the full weight of the wet shawl as you lift it from the basin and press gently between dry towels before laying it flat in shade to dry. Never hang a wet wool shawl; the weight pulls the weave out of shape. Store folded, not hung, wrapped in a cotton muslin bag with dried neem leaves or cedar to deter moths. Professionally dry-clean once a season to preserve the aari embroidery's luster and integrity.
