about the piece,

Description

Lucknow has long known how to make lightness feel like luxury. This saree is woven in pure cotton and carries the unmistakable character of Chikankari, the hand-embroidery tradition that has flourished in the lanes of Lucknow for centuries. Artisans work the white thread into the willow-green ground with a restraint that is itself a kind of eloquence, each motif shaped by a vocabulary of stitches, including the shadow-work of bakhiya and the raised texture of murri, passed carefully from one generation to the next. The golden border holds the composition together, lending just enough warmth to offset the cool, botanical softness of the ground colour. Pure cotton breathes generously through the season, making this a saree that is as suited to a long afternoon gathering as it is to a festive evening where understatement reads as confidence. Pair it with a silk or tissue blouse in ivory or deep gold to honour the border. A single strand of polki or pearl is all the adornment this saree requires.

the story,

Behind this piece

Chikankari is Lucknow's most intimate language, a needlework tradition rooted in the Nawabi courts of Awadh and carried forward by generations of karigars in the old city's narrow galis. On this willow-green cotton, the embroidery moves in the signature shadow-work and phanda stitches that distinguish genuine Lucknawi chikan from its imitations. The golden border adds a quiet formality, a deliberate counterpoint to the fabric's airy softness. Cotton was historically the preferred ground for summer chikan, allowing the open-weave stitches to breathe and the light to travel through the cloth exactly as intended.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this saree to a daytime wedding reception with a sleeveless ivory or champagne blouse in raw silk, letting the embroidery hold the attention. A thin antique-gold necklace in Kundan or Polki settles beautifully against the willow ground. For a literary evening or cultural gathering, pair it with a full-sleeved blouse in deep bronze and slip into block-printed Kolhapuri sandals. Diaspora shoppers dressing for Eid or a summer garden party might choose pearl drop earrings, a gathered bun, and minimal makeup to let the chikan speak without competition.

to last,

Fabric & care

Wash this pure cotton saree by hand in cold water using a gentle, pH-neutral detergent. Never wring or twist the fabric; press out water gently and dry flat in shade to prevent the embroidery threads from distorting. Do not soak for longer than five minutes. Iron on a low cotton setting, face-down on a soft cloth, to protect the chikan stitches. Store the saree loosely folded in a muslin cloth, away from direct light. Avoid plastic bags, which trap moisture and weaken cotton fibres over time.

Each piece is hand-picked from artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Some are handloomed on traditional pit looms, others use block-printing, hand-embroidery, or heritage techniques passed down through generations. Small irregularities are part of the character — not a defect.
