Behind this piece
The buti, that small flowering motif woven directly into fabric, carries centuries of courtly memory. In North Indian weaving traditions, jacquard-woven bootis were once the privilege of royal trousseaux, each repeat a testament to the loom's patience. Art silk, a yarn spun from viscose rather than the silkworm, democratised this language of ornament without surrendering its lustre. The all-over buti placement on this waistcoat recalls the density of Banarasi brocade vocabulary, adapted here for contemporary occasion wear. Five colours honour different temperaments: the restraint of Pale Gold, the ardour of Rio Red.
How to style
For a daytime mehendi, pair the Antelope waistcoat over a cream kurta in chanderi, with kolhapuri sandals and a single strand of wooden beads. For a baraat or sangeet, choose Rio Red above ivory silk trousers, anchored by juttis in mirror-work and a matte brass kada. For formal receptions within the diaspora, Blue Sapphire worn over a slim black kurta reads as sharply as a dinner jacket, requiring only a pocket square in raw silk and leather Oxford shoes. Each colour rewards a different occasion and a different generation.
Fabric & care
Art silk carries the drape of silk but benefits from gentler handling. Hand wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, keeping the soak brief and avoiding any wringing or twisting. Rinse thoroughly, then press flat between two cotton towels to remove excess moisture. Dry in shade away from direct sunlight, which dulls the yarn's sheen over time. Iron on a low setting with a pressing cloth placed between the iron and the fabric. Store folded in a breathable muslin bag, never on a wire hanger, to preserve the structured front and woven surface.
