Behind this piece
Jamawar weaving traces its lineage to the shawl workshops of Kashmir, where weavers once laboured for years over a single piece intended for Mughal courts. The word itself is believed to derive from *jama* (robe) and *war* (yard), reflecting the fabric's original purpose as yardage for royal garments. This stole carries that inheritance forward: the multicolour paisley motifs, known as *buta* or *boteh*, are woven directly into the wool ground using the kani or harness-loom technique, rather than printed or embroidered. Each colour shift within a motif requires a separate weft insertion, making the weave itself the ornament.
How to style
Drape this stole over a warm ivory or charcoal Pheran for a Kashmiri winter silhouette that needs no further embellishment. For city wear, fold it lengthwise over a camel-toned cashmere kurta and slim churidar, anchoring the look with oxidised silver jhumkas and flat Kolhapuri sandals. At a winter wedding, layer it loosely over a silk chanderi saree in rust or deep teal; the taupe ground will draw out the gold zari without competing. A single antique gold kada on the wrist is sufficient jewellery in every case.
Fabric & care
Wool retains its beauty longest when treated with patience. Hand wash in cool water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent formulated for woollens; never wring or twist the fabric. Rinse gently, then press out excess water between two clean towels and reshape before drying flat in shade. Avoid direct sunlight, which fades the multicolour weft threads over time. Store folded, not hung, to prevent shoulder distortion, wrapped in a cotton muslin cloth. Place dried neem leaves or cedar blocks nearby to deter moths. With correct care, a jamawar wool stole can outlast several generations.
