Volcanic-Glass Kashmiri Saree with Aari Embroidered Paisleys and Flowers Border-Pallu
Hand-wash gently with mild detergent. Do not wring. Dry in shade, iron on the lowest setting.
Description
There are colours that carry the memory of mountain nights, and volcanic glass is one of them. This georgette saree is worked in the Aari tradition of Kashmir, a craft sustained by artisans who guide a hooked needle through fabric with the precision of centuries of accumulated knowledge. The Aari embroidery here traces paisleys and full-blown florals across the border and pallu, each motif built from fine chain stitching that catches light without demanding it. Georgette lends the drape a particular kind of honesty: weightless in the hand, fluid at the shoulder, and generous in how it moves. The deep volcanic-glass ground is offset by parchment threadwork, a pairing that feels simultaneously ancient and entirely current. This is a saree suited to winter evenings, to cultural gatherings, to any occasion that calls for considered dressing rather than spectacle. Pair it with a parchment silk blouse to let the embroidery read clearly, or choose a tone-on-tone volcanic-glass blouse for a more seamless, enveloping silhouette. Minimal gold jewellery from Rajasthan or unpolished silver from the Northeast would each sit well here.

Behind this piece
Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aari, that craftsmen in the Kashmir Valley have wielded for centuries to coax intricate paisleys and blossoming chinar motifs from fine ground fabrics. The tradition belongs largely to the artisan clusters of Srinagar and its surrounding villages, where the craft passed through generations of Muslim karigar families. Here, on a weightless georgette ground the colour of cooling lava, those paisleys travel along the border and bloom across the pallu, each stitch pulled by hand with the patience that only a living craft lineage can teach.
How to style
For a winter wedding reception, wear this saree with a full-sleeved ivory silk blouse and antique silver Kashmiri earrings set with semi-precious stones. At a formal literary evening or cultural soiree, pair it with a high-neck charcoal blouse and minimal oxidised silver cuffs. For a relaxed festive gathering, drape it in the Nivi style over a sleeveless parchment-toned blouse and finish with tan leather kolhapuris. The volcanic glass ground reads as sophisticated near-black in candlelight, making heavy ornamentation unnecessary across all three occasions.
Fabric & care
Georgette is a crepe-weave fabric with a lightly granular surface that loosens under heat or rough handling. Dry-clean this saree to protect both the base fabric and the Aari threadwork. If hand-washing is unavoidable, use cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent and never wring or twist the cloth. Lay it flat on a clean cotton towel to absorb moisture, then hang in shade. Iron on the lowest setting with a pressing cloth placed between the iron and the embroidered sections. Store loosely folded in a muslin cloth, away from direct light.
