Behind this piece
Zardozi, from the Persian words for gold and needlework, arrived in India through Mughal courts and took root most deeply in Lucknow and Delhi, where artisans stitched entire kingdoms onto fabric. This navy velvet lehenga carries that lineage forward: metallic zardozi threadwork is interspersed with hand-applied beads, building texture that catches candlelight the way no printed cloth ever could. The Banarasi silk dupatta, with its characteristic silk tassels, speaks to the weaving traditions of Varanasi, where the loom itself is treated as a sacred instrument. Two crafts, one silhouette.
How to style
For a winter wedding, pair this lehenga with a polki and uncut diamond choker set to mirror the antique gold tones of the zardozi. Style the Banarasi dupatta as a veil rather than a drape to honour its weight and weave. For a festive evening reception, swap the choker for long jadau earrings and wear the choli slightly off-shoulder. On a less formal occasion, the choli pairs beautifully with a plain ivory gharara or wide-leg silk trousers. Finish every look with heeled mojris in deep burgundy or antique gold khussa.
Fabric & care
Velvet is a directional, pile-woven fabric and requires careful handling. Dry-clean only; never machine-wash or hand-wring, as this crushes the pile permanently and distorts the zardozi embroidery. After wear, hang the lehenga on a padded hanger in a breathable cotton garment bag; never fold on the embroidered panels. Store the Banarasi dupatta rolled in unbleached muslin rather than plastic. Should velvet pile flatten in storage, steam gently from the reverse side, keeping the iron at a distance. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which fades both the deep navy and the metallic threads.
