Machine or hand-wash cold, inside out. Air-dry in shade. Iron on medium heat. Wash with similar colours the first time.
Behind this piece
Madhubani painting originates in the Mithila region of Bihar, where women have long adorned the walls and floors of their homes with imagery drawn from nature, mythology, and ritual. The tradition holds particular depth in villages such as Ranti and Jitwarpur, where it has been passed down through generations of women artists. Practised with natural pigments on handmade paper, cloth, and now cotton, its bold outlines and intricate fill-work carry a vocabulary of fish, lotuses, peacocks, and the sun. Each motif painted onto this two-ply cotton mask is a small act of cultural continuity.
How to style
Wear this mask alongside a cotton block-print kurta in ochre or terracotta for a cohesive Mithila-inspired aesthetic at a craft fair or cultural gathering. Pair it with a handwoven khadi salwar set in natural ivory to let the painted motifs take full prominence. For a more contemporary look, layer it with a structured linen co-ord in deep indigo and finish with oxidised silver jhumkas and kolhapuri chappals. The mask works best when your palette is restrained, allowing the Madhubani line-work its proper visual weight rather than competing with busy prints.
Fabric & care
Hand wash this cotton mask in cold water with a mild, ph-neutral detergent. Do not soak for extended periods, as prolonged immersion may soften the hand-painted pigments over time. Wash gently by hand rather than by machine to protect the painted surface from abrasion. Lay flat to dry in the shade; direct sunlight can fade both the cotton fibre and the painted motifs. Do not wring or twist. Store flat or loosely folded in a muslin pouch away from moisture. With attentive care, the cotton will remain crisp and the painting vivid through many seasons of wear.
