the story,

Behind this piece

Madhubani painting originates in the Mithila region of Bihar, a tradition centuries old that was once confined to the mud walls and floors of village homes. Practised primarily by women of the Brahmin and Kayastha communities, it found wider recognition only after the 1934 Bihar earthquake, when Bhaskar Kulkarni encouraged artists to transfer their imagery onto paper. The lotus, or kamal, holds particular reverence in this vocabulary: a symbol of purity, creation, and the goddess Lakshmi. Here, that ancient motif breathes on two-ply cotton, hand-painted with the same unhurried devotion it has always demanded.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this mask with a hand-block-printed cotton kurta in ivory or pale saffron, letting the Madhubani lotus read as a deliberate extension of the surface pattern. For a morning at a craft fair or a literary festival, pair it with a Maheshwari silk dupatta in rose and silver, and juttis in tan leather. On quieter days, it complements a plain white linen co-ord beautifully. A single oxidised silver ring and minimal kajal complete the register: the mask becomes the focal ornament, which is precisely the intention of wearable folk art.

to last,

Fabric & care

Hand-wash this mask separately in cold water with a mild, colour-safe detergent. Do not soak for longer than three minutes, as prolonged immersion may soften the hand-painted pigment over time. Rinse gently, never wring. Press between two clean cotton towels and reshape before drying flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which can fade natural pigments. Do not iron directly over the painted surface; iron only the cotton reverse on a low setting. Store flat or loosely rolled in a muslin pouch. With careful handling, both the cotton and the painted motifs age gracefully.
