about the piece,

Description

A small canvas can hold an entire cosmology. This two-ply cotton mask carries the visual language of Mithila, where women have painted the walls and floors of their homes for centuries, translating ritual, nature, and geometry into line. The motifs here are geometric, distilled from that long tradition: grids, chevrons, and interlocking forms rendered by hand in the unhurried manner that defines authentic Madhubani work. Pure cotton, doubled for comfort and breathability, gives the mask a clean drape against the face without the stiffness of synthetic alternatives. At seven inches by five and a half, it fits with ease while leaving room for the painted surface to be properly seen. Each piece is individually hand-painted, which means minor variations in line and pigment are not imperfections but evidence of a human hand at work. Wear it with a handloom kurta in ivory or earthy ochre to let the bold geometry read clearly. It also pairs well with contemporary separates when you want to carry a thread of craft into an otherwise modern ensemble.

the story,

Behind this piece

Madhubani painting traces its roots to the Mithila region of Bihar, where women once adorned the walls and floors of their homes with intricate imagery drawn from nature, mythology, and daily life. The geometric tradition within Madhubani, sometimes called Bharni or Kachni in related styles, favours precise lines, repeated forms, and bold boundaries filled with pattern. Practised across generations in villages such as Ranti and Jitwarpur, this art moved from earthen walls to paper, fabric, and now to cotton. Each mask here carries that same unhurried precision, hand-painted by artisans schooled in a language older than any printed textile.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this mask with a handloom cotton kurta in ivory or brick red to let the black-lined geometric motifs speak clearly. For a morning farmers' market or a heritage craft fair, pair it with a Bagru-printed co-ord set and kolhapuri flats in tan. On days when you dress in solid linen separates for a city errand, this mask becomes the single considered accent. If you choose it alongside a Chanderi silk dupatta for a festive lunch, keep your jewellery minimal: small silver studs or a thin oxidised bangle will honour the geometry without competing with it.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure cotton breathes and softens beautifully with careful washing. Hand-wash this mask in cool water with a mild, colour-safe detergent, gently working the fabric rather than wringing or twisting it. Rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear. To preserve the hand-painted motifs, do not soak for longer than two minutes and avoid direct, prolonged sunlight when drying. Lay flat or hang in shade. Do not iron directly over the painted areas; press only the cotton borders with a cool iron. Stored folded in a cotton pouch away from moisture, this mask will hold its colour and structure across many wearings.

Each piece is hand-picked from artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Some are handloomed on traditional pit looms, others use block-printing, hand-embroidery, or heritage techniques passed down through generations. Small irregularities are part of the character — not a defect.
