Madhubani painting originates in the Mithila region of Bihar, practised for centuries by women who once painted the walls and floors of their homes during festivals and weddings. The tradition carries a visual language of its own: bold outlines, intricate cross-hatching, and nature drawn large and ceremonial. These masks carry that same hand-painted energy onto two-ply pure cotton, each bloom rendered by hand and therefore unrepeatable. The big floral motifs belong to a style that celebrates abundance and symmetry, rooted in a region where art has always been inseparable from daily ritual.
How to style
Wear this mask with a white cotton kurta and block-printed palazzo trousers for a daytime cultural event or art fair. The painted florals read beautifully against plain, solid-toned clothing in cream, indigo, or terracotta. For a more curated look, pair it with a Chanderi silk dupatta and kolhapuri sandals, letting the Madhubani motifs become the single point of colour. Fabric & care
Hand wash separately in cold water using a mild, colour-safe detergent, as the hand-painted pigments require gentle handling. Avoid soaking for longer than five minutes. Do not wring; press the water out softly and lay flat to dry in shade, away from direct sunlight which can fade the painted motifs over time. Do not tumble dry. Iron on a low cotton setting from the reverse side only. Store flat or loosely folded in a muslin cloth pouch. With consistent careful handling, both the cotton and the painted surface will remain vivid through regular use.
