the story,

Behind this piece

Jamdani is among the oldest continuous weaving traditions in the world, its origins traced to the looms of Dhaka and the riverine districts of undivided Bengal. Recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, this textile is woven on a pit loom by pairs of weavers working in quiet unison, placing supplementary weft threads by hand to build each buti. On this saree, the floral motifs emerge from a cannoli cream ground without the aid of any printing or embroidery. The weave itself is the ornament. Cotton that breathes like morning air carries centuries of accumulated skill within its structure.

to wear it,

How to style

Drape this saree in the traditional Bengali Aath Poure style for a cultural celebration or Durga Puja gathering, and pin it with a vintage brass brooch at the shoulder. For a literary festival or heritage exhibition, pair it with an off-white cotton blouse featuring delicate kantha embroidery and flat Kolhapuri sandals in tan. At a daytime wedding lunch, layer it with a sheer organza blouse in pale gold, and finish with dokra jewellery from Bastar: a chunky collar and mismatched earrings that honour one Indian craft tradition with another.

to last,

Fabric & care

Wash this pure cotton Jamdani by hand in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, and never twist or wring the fabric. Rinse gently, then roll it inside a clean cotton towel to absorb excess water before drip-drying in shade. Direct sunlight will lift the natural warmth of the cream ground over time. Iron on a low-to-medium setting while the saree remains slightly damp, on the reverse side. Store folded in a soft muslin cloth, away from synthetic materials and moisture, and refold along different lines each season to preserve the weave's integrity.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
