the story,

Behind this piece

Gujarat has long been a cradle of devotional embroidery, where the needle becomes an act of prayer. This choli carries Radha and Krishna rendered in multicoloured thread work, a tradition rooted in the bhakti sensibility of western India, where sacred imagery has adorned garments for centuries. The technique draws from a lineage of Gujarati artisans who stitch devotional figures with a precision that is both spiritual and aesthetic. Tomato-red, auspicious and vivid in the Gujarati palette, grounds the composition, making the embroidered figures luminous against the art silk ground.

to wear it,

How to style

Pair this choli with a mirror-work or block-printed lehenga in ivory or deep indigo for a festive occasion such as Navratri or a wedding sangeet. For a quieter celebration, let it meet a silk dupatta in saffron or gold tissue draped loosely over one shoulder. Complete the look with oxidised silver jewellery from Rajasthan, particularly chandbali earrings and stacked bangles in lac or glass. Kolhapuri chappals or embroidered juttis in tan leather bring the ensemble down to earth without diminishing its festive character.

to last,

Fabric & care

Art silk responds best to a gentle hand wash in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Avoid wringing; press out water by rolling the garment in a clean cotton towel. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which fades both the base fabric and the embroidery threads. Do not machine wash or tumble dry. Iron on low heat from the reverse side, placing a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the embroidery to protect the thread work. Store folded in a muslin cloth, never in polythene, to allow the fabric to breathe.
