the story,

Behind this piece

Surat has long held a singular place in India's textile imagination. Once a thriving port city where Mughal trade routes converged, it cultivated a tradition of weaving luminous fabrics threaded with metal. This tissue fabric continues that lineage, its art silk ground catching light the way old zari-laced velvets once did in Nawabi courts. The metallic thread embroidery, worked in floral motifs, and the golden border speak to Surat's enduring instinct for surface richness. Purple and turquoise together recall the jewel tones that Gujarati and Rajasthani patrons have always favoured in ceremonial dress.

to wear it,

How to style

Cut this fabric into an unlined anarkali kurta and pair it with ivory palazzo trousers for a festive evening that does not overclaim. The golden border, when used as a dupatta hem, frames a silk lehenga beautifully for a mehendi or sangeet. For a contemporary reading, have a structured boxy blouse tailored from it and wear it with wide-leg ivory trousers. Complement either look with polki or kundan earrings in yellow gold. Gold-toned kolhapuris or block-heeled nagras in tan will ground the iridescence without competing with the fabric's own quiet drama.

to last,

Fabric & care

Art silk, despite its silk-like drape, is a woven viscose fibre and requires gentle handling. Dry clean this fabric for best results, particularly given the metallic thread embroidery, which can distort under agitation. If hand-washing is necessary, use cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent and do not wring or twist. Press on a low setting with a cloth placed between the iron and the fabric surface. Store rolled rather than folded to prevent crease lines setting into the metallic threads. Keep away from prolonged humidity, which weakens viscose fibres over time.
