Behind this piece
Paithani is among Maharashtra's most venerated textile traditions, woven in the ancient town of Paithan on the banks of the Godavari. Each saree is constructed on a pit loom, with the characteristic oblique interlocking technique that gives the fabric its reversible, luminous quality. The peacock motif on the anchal, rendered here in zari on a ground of tillandsia purple, is native to Paithani vocabulary and appears in court records dating to the Yadava period. This piece is woven by Azeem Khan, working within a craft lineage that treats every border and pallu as a considered composition.
How to style
For a festive afternoon, pair this saree with a raw silk blouse in champagne or ivory to allow the purple to lead. At a wedding reception, drape it in the Nauvari style and anchor the look with temple-gold jewellery, specifically a long nath and a choker set with uncut stones. For a cultural evening or a Diwali gathering, a simple boat-neck blouse in matching silk with gold Kolhapuri heels keeps the saree unhurried and precise. Let the zari peacocks speak without competition from printed or embroidered accessories.
Fabric & care
Pure silk Paithani requires dry cleaning after every wear to protect both the silk warp and the zari weft, which can tarnish with moisture. If storing between occasions, fold along the existing creases with a soft muslin cloth laid between each layer to prevent zari from cutting into the silk. Store flat or loosely rolled, never hung, as silk stretches under its own weight. Keep in a breathable cotton bag away from direct light. Avoid contact with perfume and hairspray, which degrade silk fibres and oxidise silver-wrapped zari threads over time.
