Behind this piece
Jamdani is among the oldest surviving handloom traditions on the Indian subcontinent, woven on the banks of the Shitalakshya river in the Dhaka region of Bangladesh, where weavers work on pit looms without a cartoon or transfer, placing each supplementary weft thread entirely from memory. UNESCO recognised this practice as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013. The tidepool-green ground of this saree carries small scattered bootis across the body, and the pallu opens into sunflower motifs, each flower built thread by thread. The result is cotton that reads, in certain light, almost like muslin cloud.
How to style
For a literary festival or gallery opening, wear this with a raw-silk ivory blouse, kolhapuri flats in tan, and a single strand of oxidised silver. At a wedding lunch, pair it with a deep moss-green embroidered blouse in chanderi, gold Dhokra earrings, and block-heeled juttis. For everyday office wear in a creative field, try a fitted black cotton blouse, minimal gold studs, and leather mojris in cognac. The tidepool-green ground is generous with other tones; it absorbs terracotta, ivory, and deep indigo without competition, giving the wearer considerable room to build a look.
Fabric & care
Wash this saree by hand in cool water with a gentle, pH-neutral detergent, and keep agitation minimal to protect the supplementary weft bootis from pulling. Do not wring. Roll it gently in a clean cotton towel to press out excess water, then dry in shade away from direct sunlight, which yellows undyed cotton over time. Once fully dry, fold along the original pleats and store wrapped in a soft cotton muslin cloth, never in plastic. A light press with a medium iron on the reverse side before wearing will restore the crispness characteristic of fine Jamdani cotton.
