about the piece,

Description

Where Himalayan iconography meets the sacred looms of Banaras, this handwoven silk patch carries the fierce grace of a wrathful deity into the realm of textile art. Woven in pure silk on the handlooms of Varanasi, it belongs to a rare tradition where Buddhist iconographic motifs, typically associated with Tibetan thangka painting, find new expression in the warp and weft of Banarasi weaving. The wrathful deity form, potent and precisely rendered, speaks of the weaver's discipline in translating a devotional image into the language of interlaced silk threads. Each colour holds its depth through the quality of the yarn and the precision of the pick, neither bleeding nor flattening under scrutiny. This is a piece that exists at the crossroads of two living traditions, the monastic art of the Himalayas and the loom culture of the Gangetic plains. Consider it as an embellishment on a silk jacket, a meditation cushion cover, or a framed textile study for a contemplative interior. It pairs beautifully with garments in ivory, saffron, or deep monastic red.

the story,

Behind this piece

Varanasi's weavers have long held a singular gift: the ability to translate the sacred into silk. This patch carries a wrathful deity rendered through the Banarasi handloom tradition, where drawloom or jacquard technique captures iconographic detail with uncommon precision. The Tibetan Buddhist imagery, fierce and devotional in equal measure, speaks to centuries of cultural exchange along trade and pilgrimage routes connecting the Gangetic plains to the Himalayas. Banaras remains the natural home for such work, its weaving families having absorbed influences from across Asia, returning them always as something luminous and entirely their own.

to wear it,

How to style

Centred on the back yoke of an ivory raw-silk jacket, this patch becomes the quiet focal point of a formal gathering. Pair that jacket with a straight-cut churidar and juttis in antique gold leather. For a contemporary reading, appliqué it onto a dark indigo tussar stole worn over linen separates at a cultural evening. It also sits beautifully on a cream dupatta, anchored at one shoulder. In each instance, keep jewellery restrained: small silver ear studs or a single Tibetan silver ring allows the iconography to breathe without competition.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure silk demands patience rather than effort. Dry-clean this patch whenever possible, particularly if mounted on a finished garment. If hand-washing is necessary, use cold water and a drop of mild pH-neutral detergent, never wringing or twisting the cloth. Lay flat on a clean cotton towel to dry away from direct sunlight, which fades natural silk dyes over time. Store flat or loosely rolled in acid-free tissue inside a breathable muslin pouch. A small cedar block nearby deters insects without the chemical residue that mothballs leave on delicate fibres.

Each piece is hand-picked from artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Some are handloomed on traditional pit looms, others use block-printing, hand-embroidery, or heritage techniques passed down through generations. Small irregularities are part of the character — not a defect.
