about the piece,

Description

Terra-cotta holds the memory of Indian earth, and this Nehru jacket waistcoat carries that warmth with quiet authority. Worked in art silk that catches light without demanding attention, the piece brings together two distinct traditions: the delicate shadow-embroidery of Chikankari, long practised by artisan clusters in and around Lucknow, and the festive punctuation of hand-applied sequins that have ornamented celebratory Indian dress for generations. The Chikankari here is rendered in tonal thread, so the surface reads as texture before it reads as ornament, a restraint that speaks to the craft's finest expressions. The terra-cotta ground is neither red nor brown but something in between, that particular shade the subcontinent's soil turns in late afternoon light. Structured at the collar in the Nehru tradition, the silhouette suits both formal occasions and the considered dressing of a winter cultural evening. Wear it over an ivory or cream kurta in fine cotton or silk to allow the embroidery its full voice. A churidar in deep espresso or raw umber would complete the composition with understated elegance.

the story,

Behind this piece

Chikankari is Lucknow's most eloquent conversation between needle and cloth, a craft refined over four centuries in the narrow galis of the city's old quarters. Karigars trained in this tradition work by hand to pull thread into shadow-work florals, phanda knots, and jaali openings that let light through like a screen of carved stone. Here, the embroidery meets sequin embellishment on a terra-cotta art silk ground, giving the Nehru jacket a surface that holds warmth and shimmer together without competing. The result is festive restraint, dressed in the grammar of Awadhi craft.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this jacket over an ivory or warm cream kurta-pyjama set in cotton or chanderi to let the terra-cotta read as the dominant note. For a wedding reception, pair it with a fine silk kurta in burnt umber or sand, adding mojris in hand-embroidered leather from Agra and a pocket square in raw silk. On a cooler winter evening, layer it over a mandarin-collar shirt in off-white, with straight-cut trousers in a complementary beige. A single gold kada at the wrist is enough jewellery; the embroidery earns its own attention.

to last,

Fabric & care

Art silk, woven from viscose or synthetic filaments, requires patient handling. Dry-clean this jacket at the first instance, as the sequin embellishments and Chikankari threadwork are vulnerable to agitation and heat. If hand-washing is necessary, use cool water with a gentle, pH-neutral detergent, never wringing or twisting the fabric. Lay flat to dry in shade, away from direct sunlight which fades the terra-cotta ground. Store folded in a muslin cloth, not a plastic cover, and keep away from moisture to preserve the sequin lustre across many seasons of wear.

Frequently asked

Each piece is hand-picked from artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Some are handloomed on traditional pit looms, others use block-printing, hand-embroidery, or heritage techniques passed down through generations. Small irregularities are part of the character — not a defect.
