Behind this piece
Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aari, that Kashmiri craftsmen have wielded for centuries across the valley's karkhanas. Worked in continuous chain stitch onto fabric stretched taut over a wooden frame, the technique allows the needle to travel in unbroken, curving lines, making it singularly suited to floral vine motifs. Here, those vines unspool across satin and velvet in a colour that recalls winter dusk above the Dal Lake. The craft sits within a living tradition sustained by family workshops in Srinagar and surrounding districts, passing from father to son across generations.
How to style
Wear this gown as a standalone occasion piece with ivory or champagne pointed-toe heeled mules and a single strand of freshwater pearls kept long. For a northern winter wedding, layer a sheer ivory organza dupatta loosely over one shoulder. If your gathering is more intimate, consider pairing it with a structured brocade jacket in deep ivory or bone, and small kundan drop earrings. The taupe-gray ground reads particularly well against warm skin tones under candlelight, making it a considered choice for cocktail dinners, mehendi evenings, and winter receptions alike.
Fabric & care
Satin and velvet each demand separate consideration when combined in a single garment. Dry-clean only; home washing risks crushing the velvet pile and dulling the satin's lustre permanently. Between wearings, hang the gown on a padded hanger inside a breathable cotton garment bag, never plastic. Keep it away from direct sunlight, which can shift the taupe-gray tone subtly over time. Should the velvet pile flatten, hold the fabric over gentle steam without direct contact and brush lightly in one direction. Store with cedar blocks nearby to discourage moths and preserve the embroidered threads.
