about the piece,

Description

Tango red, the colour of something decided rather than merely chosen, arrives here in the ancient vocabulary of Gujarati Bandhani. Across this georgette ground, resist-tied points of light open into the characteristic constellation of the Bandhani tradition, each knot the result of a craftsperson's deliberate pinch and bind before the dye bath ever touches the cloth. Layered over this dot-work is a zari-woven floral-paisley jaal, its gold threads tracing a formal garden across the field in the manner long associated with the looms of Saurashtra and Kutch. Georgette lends the whole a fluid drape and a translucent warmth, allowing the zari to catch light without overwhelming the airy hand of the fabric. The meeting of two distinct craft registers, tie-dye surface and woven ornament, gives this saree a considered complexity that rewards close attention. It is suited to celebratory occasions where one wishes to be festive without being loud. Pair it with an unembellished silk blouse in deep ivory or champagne to let the red and gold speak without interruption. Minimal polki jewellery and a single bangle will complete the register beautifully.

the story,

Behind this piece

Bandhani is one of Gujarat's oldest resist-dyeing traditions, practised with particular mastery in the Kutch and Saurashtra regions by Khatri artisan families who have carried the craft across generations. Each tie is made by hand, pinching minuscule points of fabric into knots before the cloth meets the dye bath. The resulting constellation of dots is not a print but a negotiation between cloth, thread, and colour. Here, that ancient vocabulary meets the weightless drape of georgette and the formal ambition of a zari-woven floral-paisley jaal, making something simultaneously rooted and contemporary.

to wear it,

How to style

For a wedding reception, pair this saree with a sleeveless raw-silk blouse in ivory or antique gold, and finish with uncut diamond or polki drop earrings. For Navratri celebrations, a contrast blouse in deep emerald gives it festive energy. For a winter art opening or cultural evening, drape it over a full-sleeved fitted blouse in champagne, add block-heeled mojris in tan leather, and keep the jewellery minimal: a single gold bangle and a small nose pin. The tango-red reads powerfully under both natural and warm artificial light.

to last,

Fabric & care

Georgette is a delicate crêpe-weave fabric that responds poorly to agitation. Dry-clean this saree for the first wash to preserve the zari's lustre and the integrity of the bandhani knots. If hand-washing at home, use cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, and never wring or twist the fabric. Roll it gently in a clean cotton towel to remove excess moisture, then dry flat in shade. Store folded with a thin muslin layer between the pleats to prevent zari tarnish, and keep away from direct sunlight to protect the vibrancy of the red dye.

Each piece is hand-picked from artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Some are handloomed on traditional pit looms, others use block-printing, hand-embroidery, or heritage techniques passed down through generations. Small irregularities are part of the character — not a defect.
