the story,

Behind this piece

Kani weaving originates in the Kanihama village of Kashmir, where artisans once worked exclusively in pure pashmina, directing hundreds of tiny wooden kani bobbins across the loom without lifting their eyes from the pattern scroll, or talim, read aloud by a master weaver. The jamawar tradition, historically patronised by Mughal courts, is known for its dense, all-over buti and paisley compositions. This fabric honours that grammar of motif: the woven paisleys carry the rhythm of centuries, rendered here in a deep Tahitian teal that recalls the ink-blue shikara waters of Dal Lake at dusk.

to wear it,

How to style

Cut the kameez in a straight silhouette with side slits, pairing it with ivory wide-leg palazzo trousers to let the teal hold centre stage. For a festive occasion such as a mehendi or an intimate family gathering, layer the dupatta draped across one shoulder and secure it with a jadau brooch in gold and turquoise. Complete the look with block-heeled kolhapuri sandals in cognac leather. Alternatively, stitch the fabric into an angrakha-style kurta and pair it with antique silver jhumkas for a more relaxed, literary-event aesthetic.

to last,

Fabric & care

Acrylic fibres are more resilient than natural alternatives but reward gentle handling. Hand wash in cool water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent; avoid soaking for more than five minutes. Do not wring. Press out excess water between two clean towels and dry flat in shade to prevent the teal from fading under direct sunlight. Iron on a low setting with a pressing cloth placed between the iron and the fabric surface. Store folded, not hung, to prevent the woven structure from stretching. Cedar blocks nearby will discourage moths during long storage.
