Behind this piece
Kalamkari, one of India's oldest narrative textile traditions, traces its roots to the temple towns of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where artists once illustrated mythological stories on cloth using a bamboo pen and natural dyes. The word itself means "pen work" in Persian. This dupatta honours that lineage through its printed cow motif, a sacred image long woven into the iconography of Srikalahasti and Machilipatnam Kalamkari. The warm super-pink ground, rendered on cotton-silk, carries the distinctive hand of Telangana's craft tradition: bold, devotional, and quietly luminous against the restraint of its zari border.
How to style
Drape this dupatta over a white cotton kurta with wide-leg palazzos for a gallery opening or literary afternoon. For a festive occasion, pair it with a deep teal or ivory chanderi anarkali, letting the super-pink command the silhouette. The zari border earns its moment against a plain silk blouse worn with a pre-draped skirt. Jewellery should stay understated: oxidised silver jhumkas complement the folk quality of the cow motif, while thin gold bangles suit the formal pairing. Kolhapuri chappals or block-heeled mojris finish each look with regional coherence.
Fabric & care
Cotton-silk blends require gentle handling to preserve both fibres. Hand-wash separately in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, and never soak for longer than five minutes. Avoid wringing; press the dupatta gently between two dry towels to remove excess water. Dry flat in shade to prevent the super-pink from fading and to protect the zari from oxidising. Iron on a medium-low setting, reverse-side only, with a pressing cloth over the border. Store folded in a muslin or cotton cover, away from direct light and moisture, to keep the printed motifs crisp for years.
