about the piece,

Description

There is a particular joy in a colour that arrives before the season does, and this super-lemon cotton carries exactly that quality of bright, unhurried anticipation. The fabric is pure cotton, woven to a crisp yet breathable hand that drapes cleanly and softens gently with each wash. Across its surface, Kalamkari block printing lays down its characteristically bold outlines and earthy motifs, a tradition rooted in the workshop towns of Andhra Pradesh where artisans have long negotiated between vegetable pigment and open air. Block Kalamkari, distinct from its pen-drawn counterpart, relies on carved wooden stamps pressed with considered rhythm, each repeat carrying the slight, honest variation that separates hand craft from mechanical reproduction. The yellow ground makes the printed motifs sing without effort, lending the cloth a festivity that reads as natural rather than contrived. This is a fabric suited to summer kurtas, gathered skirts, and loose palazzo sets, equally at home on a weekday verandah or a Sunday market. Style it against ivory or raw-white separates to let the lemon hold the conversation, or pair it with deep indigo for a contrast that feels considered and quietly traditional.

the story,

Behind this piece

Kalamkari, one of India's oldest narrative textile traditions, divides into two distinct schools: the freehand pen work of Srikalahasti in Andhra Pradesh, and the block-printed heritage of Machilipatnam. This fabric belongs to the latter, where carved wooden blocks carry centuries of motif vocabulary, from flowering creepers to geometric borders, across cotton in a single, rhythmic press. The super-lemon ground, vivid yet grounded, is characteristic of the bold palette that Machilipatnam artisans favour, allowing each printed element to read with clarity. Cotton was always the chosen canvas here, absorbing natural and vegetable-derived dyes with quiet fidelity.

to wear it,

How to style

Cut this fabric into an unlined kurta for a summer afternoon, pairing it with white wide-leg palazzos and flat Kolhapuri chappals in tan leather. For a festive occasion, consider a gathered midi skirt worn with a solid ivory cotton blouse; finish with oxidised silver earrings that echo the block-printed motifs. The fabric also tailors beautifully into a relaxed co-ord set, the sharp lemon reading as intentional colour rather than accent. Keep accessories restrained and handcrafted throughout; the print carries the conversation and needs little competition from ornament.

to last,

Fabric & care

Wash this pure cotton fabric in cold water, gently by hand, using a mild detergent without bleach. The block-printed surface is best treated with care on the first two washes, as some surface colour may release slightly before settling. Lay flat or hang in shade to dry, away from direct sunlight, which can shift the yellow ground over time. Iron on a medium cotton setting while the fabric is still slightly damp to ease creases without effort. Store folded in a cool, dry place, away from moisture, to preserve both the fibre and the print.
