Behind this piece
Kani weaving is among the most demanding textile disciplines Kashmir has ever produced. Named after the small wooden spools, called kanis, that replace the conventional shuttle, this technique requires weavers to interlace hundreds of coloured threads by hand, following a talim, a coded musical notation unique to Kashmiri looms. A single stole of this complexity can occupy a master weaver for weeks. The star-white ground here is pure wool, warm without weight, and the multicolour paisley and floral motifs follow the jamawar tradition, a word rooted in the Persian for "body garment," reflecting centuries of courtly patronage.
How to style
Wear this stole folded lengthwise over a slim ivory or slate-grey cashmere kurta for a winter lunch, anchored with uncut diamond studs and kolhapuri sandals in tan leather. For an evening occasion, drape it loosely over a silk tissue anarkali in dusty rose, letting the multicolour woven field carry the ornamentation. Diaspora dressers will find it equally at home over a cream roll-neck sweater and tailored trousers, with silver kada bracelets and ankle boots, a pairing that reads as considered rather than costumed, and honours the stole without overwhelming it.
Fabric & care
Wool kani weaves should be dry-cleaned for the first wash to preserve the tight woven structure. If hand-washing at home, use cool water below 30 degrees Celsius with a mild pH-neutral detergent, gently pressing rather than wringing. Lay the stole flat on a clean cotton towel to dry, away from direct sunlight, which can fade the multicolour silk-effect threads over time. Store folded, never hung, in a breathable muslin bag with a neem sachet or cedar block to deter moths. Properly kept, a wool kani stole deepens in character across decades.
