The white cotton dhoti is among the oldest garments in the Indian subcontract, predating tailoring itself. Sets woven with a matching angavastram carry the ritual weight of temple towns across Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, where hand-loomed cotton was considered an offering as much as a garment. The multicolour thread-woven border, worked in geometric repeat, belongs to a weaving tradition where supplementary weft threads are interlaced by hand to build pattern into cloth. Fabric & care
Hand-wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent; pure cotton at this weight can weaken under prolonged machine agitation. Do not soak beyond fifteen minutes, as this may cause the supplementary weft threads of the border to bleed or distort. Dry flat in shade to prevent the fabric pulling out of shape on a line. Do not tumble dry. Iron at medium heat while the cloth is slightly damp to restore crispness without scorching the border threads. Store folded on a flat surface, away from damp, with a neem sachet to discourage insects.
