Spectra-Yellow Drape Dhoti with Angavastram Set with Ikat Woven Temple Border from Sambalpur
Machine or hand-wash cold, inside out. Air-dry in shade. Iron on medium heat. Wash with similar colours the first time.
Description
Sunlight held still in cloth, this spectra-yellow dhoti and angavastram set carries the unmistakable signature of Sambalpur's ikat tradition. Woven in pure cotton by artisans of the Barpali-Sambalpur weaving belt in Odisha, the fabric achieves its characteristic softness through hand-spun yarns that breathe with the body across long ceremonial hours. The defining feature is the temple border, where resist-dyed ikat threads are aligned with extraordinary precision before the loom even begins its rhythm, creating the geometric repeat that Sambalpuri weavers have refined across generations. That border, rendered in deep contrast against the luminous yellow ground, speaks directly to the ritual vocabulary of eastern Indian textile heritage. The two-piece format, dhoti paired with angavastram, honours a sartorial convention observed from Odishan temple courts to Bengali ancestral homes, making this set equally appropriate for pujas, weddings, and family ceremonies of significance. Pair it with a fine white or ivory kurta to let the border hold the eye without competition. For a more considered festive look, a silk kurta in deep ochre or rust will echo the warmth of the yellow ground beautifully.

SaleBehind this piece
Sambalpur sits at the heart of Odisha's weaving tradition, and the ikat work produced here is among the most technically demanding in the subcontinent. Known locally as Sambalpuri bandha, this craft requires the warp and weft threads to be resist-dyed in precise sequence before weaving begins, so the pattern emerges only as the loom comes together. The temple border on this dhoti and angavastram set carries that geometric rigour, its form rooted in centuries of ritual textile-making. The spectra-yellow ground cloth is pure cotton, woven with the clean hand that Sambalpuri looms are rightly celebrated for.
How to style
For a morning puja or a housewarming, wear this set with a plain cream or ivory kurta in cotton or mul fabric, keeping embellishment minimal so the border holds its authority. At a wedding reception, pair it with a silk half-sleeve kurta in deep ochre or rust, a gold rudraksha chain, and kolhapuri sandals in tan leather. For a cultural programme or classical performance, drape the angavastram over one shoulder above a white kurta, and add silver kadas at the wrist. Let the ikat border speak without competition in each case.
Fabric & care
Wash this pure cotton set in cold water by hand, using a gentle, pH-neutral detergent. Turn the fabric inward before washing to protect the ikat border from abrasion. Do not soak for longer than five minutes, as prolonged soaking can cause the resist-dyed colours to bleed slightly. Dry in full shade, laid flat or gently draped over a rod, never wrung. Iron on a medium-cotton setting while the fabric retains a trace of moisture, using a pressing cloth over the border. Store folded in clean cotton muslin to allow the fibre to breathe and retain its body over time.
