the story,

Behind this piece

Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aar, that Kashmiri craftspeople have wielded for centuries across the valley's ateliers. Worked onto georgette rather than the traditional wool or silk base, this saree represents an evolution of the form: the floral border and aanchal carry the same sinuous vines and blossoming motifs that once adorned royal shawls, now rendered in thread against a snow-white ground. The craft clusters around Srinagar and its surrounding towns, where families have passed the vocabulary of these florals from hand to hand across generations.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this saree with a silk organza blouse in pale gold or deep sage to let the white ground breathe. For a winter wedding or reception, layer a tissue-silk shawl across the shoulders and choose antique Kashmiri silver jewellery, particularly jhumkas with a granulated finish. Alternatively, pair it with a full-sleeved chanderi blouse and kolhapuris in natural tan for a literary festival or cultural evening. The restrained palette welcomes both block-printed and solid blouses equally, making this one saree that dresses across occasions with very little effort.

to last,

Fabric & care

Georgette is a crêpe-weave fabric that holds its drape best when handled gently. Dry-clean this saree to protect both the base fabric and the Aari threadwork, as hand-washing risks distorting the embroidered border. If storing between seasons, fold it along the embroidery lines rather than against them, wrap in a clean muslin cloth, and keep away from direct sunlight to preserve the brightness of the white. Avoid cedar balls near coloured thread; use dried neem leaves instead. Lightly steaming on a low setting, without direct contact, will restore the drape beautifully.
