Small Zardozi Chakra Patch with Faux Pearl
Gentle hand-wash separately in cold water with a mild detergent. Avoid soaking. Iron on medium heat while slightly damp.
Behind this piece
Zardozi, from the Persian words zar (gold) and dozi (embroidery), arrived in the Mughal courts of Lucknow and Delhi centuries ago and never truly left. Artisans in the old city quarters of Lucknow still work this craft by hand, coaxing metallic threads into architectural patterns on cambric foundations. This small chakra patch carries that lineage in concentrated form: a circular motif edged with faux pearls, worked in gold and silver threads against a lightweight base cloth. It is embellishment reduced to its most considered, most portable expression.
How to style
Stitch this patch at the heart of a plain ivory kurta for a Diwali gathering and let the zardozi do all the speaking. On a raw-silk dupatta, positioned at one corner, it becomes an anchor for a full bridal or festive look. For the diaspora wardrobe, it translates beautifully onto a cream linen blazer lapel, worn with oxidised silver earrings and block-printed palazzos. Gold and silver together mean this patch reads equally well against warm ivory, deep navy, or forest green. Keep footwear simple: juttis in plain leather or unembellished kolhapuris complete the register.
Fabric & care
Cambric is a fine, tightly woven cotton that responds poorly to harsh handling. Do not machine wash this patch. Spot clean gently with a soft, damp cloth and a mild detergent, working around rather than over the metallic threads and faux pearls, which can loosen under friction or prolonged soaking. Lay flat to dry in shade, away from direct sunlight, which fades both the cloth and the metallic lustre over time. Store wrapped in soft muslin or acid-free tissue, never folded tightly along the embroidered surface. Proper storage preserves thread tension and keeps the pearl setting secure for years.
