Behind this piece
Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aari, that craftsmen in Kashmir have wielded for centuries to coax silk thread into landscapes of impossible fineness. Rooted in the workshops of Srinagar, this tradition flourished under Mughal patronage and never truly left the valley. The shifting-sand palette chosen here, warm ochres dissolving into pale dunes, mirrors the tonality of Kashmiri pashmina shawls but arrives in an entirely different register: structured, modern, and worn close to the body. Each motif is worked by hand, stitch by counted stitch, on pure silk that holds light like still water.
How to style
Wear this jacket over a fine ivory silk kurta and ivory palazzo trousers for a literary festival or heritage walk where understatement reads as authority. For a winter wedding reception, layer it above a deep wine Banarasi tissue saree; the aari embroidery will converse beautifully with the brocade without competing. A third reading: pair it with straight-cut indigo denim and juttis in antique gold from Agra, letting the embroidery carry the occasion on its own terms. In each instance, choose jewellery in unpolished silver or raw gold to honour the handwork rather than overshadow it.
Fabric & care
Pure silk is a protein fibre of considerable delicacy and considerable resilience when treated well. Dry-clean only; water immersion risks distorting the aari embroidery and dulling the silk's natural lustre. Store the jacket flat or loosely rolled in a breathable muslin bag, never compressed in a plastic cover, which traps moisture and weakens the weave over time. Keep it away from direct sunlight, which fades hand-dyed silk gradually and irreversibly. Air it after each wear before returning it to storage. Handled with this care, the silk will soften beautifully across years and the embroidery will hold its form across decades.
