Behind this piece
Kutch, the salt-white terrain of Gujarat's westernmost district, has sustained one of India's most vital embroidery traditions for centuries. The artisans here work in a vocabulary of tiny mirrors, satin stitch, and chain stitch, stitching light directly into cloth. This shawl carries that language along its border, where shisha work catches the eye like sunlight on still water. Pure wool, woven to hold warmth, becomes the ground for a craft that was once the ceremonial inheritance of pastoral Rabari and Mutwa communities, expressed now in a wearable form refined for contemporary sensibility.
How to style
Drape the shawl over a silk kurta in a tonal shade, pairing Tibetan Red with deep burgundy silk for a winter evening at a heritage venue. For a cooler, more editorial mood, layer Eclipse Blue or Mallard Blue over a white cotton kurta and let the mirrored border carry all the ornament. Silver jewellery from Rajasthan, particularly oxidised cuffs or jhumkas, reads well against the embroidery. Choose low, leather mojris in tan or ivory to complete each look. The shawl works equally well as a wrap over festive western separates for diaspora occasions.
Fabric & care
Pure wool demands patience. Hand wash in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, keeping agitation to a minimum to prevent felting. Do not wring; press gently between two clean towels to remove excess water. Lay flat on a dry surface away from direct sunlight, reshaping the embroidered borders while still damp. Never hang a wet wool shawl, as the weight will distort the weave. Store folded, not rolled, in a breathable cotton bag with a cedar block nearby. With careful handling, this shawl will retain its structure and lustre for many years.
