the story,

Behind this piece

Shantiniketan, the university town Rabindranath Tagore founded in Bengal's Birbhum district, gave rise to a leather craft tradition as distinctive as its literary heritage. Local artisans developed a style of hand-tooled, hand-painted leather work using vegetable-tanned hide, decorating surfaces with folk motifs drawn from Baul imagery, Kantha geometry, and the natural world. This pair of goggles and lipstick case holder carries that lineage: each piece worked by hand, coloured in marigold, poppy red, and multi-toned pigments that age beautifully into the leather's grain. Small objects, seriously made.

to wear it,

How to style

Tuck the marigold case into a cream Lucknowi kurta ensemble for a daytime literary gathering, letting the leather's warmth echo against chikankari's quiet ivory. For travel, clip it alongside a structured Kolhapuri-strapped bag when wearing a block-printed cotton co-ord from Bagru. The poppy red variant works particularly well with a deep indigo Chanderi silk sari at an evening cultural event, anchored by oxidised silver jewellery from Rajasthan. In each instance, allow the Shantiniketan piece to function as it was always intended: a considered punctuation mark on an otherwise restrained outfit.

to last,

Fabric & care

Leather breathes and remembers how it is kept. Wipe the surface gently with a soft, barely damp cloth after use and allow it to air-dry away from direct sunlight, which fades vegetable-dyed pigments over time. Condition every three to four months with a small amount of natural leather cream or pure beeswax, working it in with circular strokes. Store the pieces inside a soft cotton pouch, never a plastic bag, which traps moisture. With attentive care, Shantiniketan leather deepens in character, its colours settling into a patina that only improves across years of use.
