the story,

Behind this piece

Sambalpur, in the heart of western Odisha, has long been the seat of the Banjara and Meher weaver communities, who carry forward the ikat tradition known as Sambalpuri bandha. This saree departs from the usual floral and geometric vocabulary to enter sacred territory: each repeat of the Surya Namaskar sequence is woven in real silver thread, with Sanskrit mantras running through the body in disciplined rows. The seal-brown silk ground, quiet as dusk, lets the silver speak. The fish border, called meen in local idiom, is an ancient symbol of fertility and abundance in Odishan textile grammar.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this saree to a morning puja, a classical dance recital, or a literary festival where understated ceremony is called for. Drape it in the Odishan style with a broad fan pleat. Pair it with a raw-silk blouse in ivory or deep rust. Silver filigree jewellery from Cuttack, particularly jhumkas and a simple chand-bali, will echo the silver zari without competing. Kolhapuri heels in cognac leather ground the look. For a contemporary occasion, a sleeveless structured blouse in champagne crepe keeps the saree's gravity intact while allowing the silver work full visibility.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure silk and real silver zari require considered handling. Dry-clean only; home washing, even gentle hand-washing, risks tarnishing the silver thread and distorting the woven ikat registers. After each wear, air the saree in shade for thirty minutes before folding. Store it wrapped in a soft muslin cloth, never in plastic, which traps humidity and accelerates silver oxidation. Refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease marks. Keep one or two small silica-gel sachets in the storage box to control moisture. Avoid direct contact with perfume or deodorant, as alcohol corrodes real silver thread.
