the story,

Behind this piece

Jamdani is among the oldest continuous weaving traditions on earth, its roots traced to the looms of Dhaka and the riverine districts of Bengal, where cotton so fine it was once called "woven air" moved through royal courts and colonial trading ledgers alike. The buti motif scattered across this sea-green ground is worked by the supplementary weft technique: each figure inserted by hand, pick by pick, without a loom mechanism to guide it. UNESCO recognises Jamdani weaving as Intangible Cultural Heritage, a designation that honours the years of apprenticeship behind every repeat.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this saree in a classic Nivi drape for a summer wedding, pairing it with a sleeveless raw-silk blouse in ivory or warm gold to let the sea-green breathe. For a literary festival or cultural afternoon, try a full-sleeved pintucked blouse in white cotton and flat Kolhapuri sandals. The restrained palette asks for jewellery that does not compete: a single strand of freshwater pearls, or oxidised silver jhumkas with a fine chain. A bun with a single jasmine string completes the register without crowding the textile's own quiet geometry.

to last,

Fabric & care

Hand-wash separately in cold water with a gentle, pH-neutral detergent, keeping agitation brief to preserve the supplementary weft floats. Never wring; instead, press gently between two clean towels and dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which strips the depth from vegetable and reactive dyes alike. Steam-iron on a low cotton setting while slightly damp, on the reverse side. Fold along the woven borders, not against them, and store wrapped in soft muslin or unbleached cotton, never in plastic, to allow the fibre to breathe across seasons.
