the story,

Behind this piece

Katan georgette occupies a rare position in the Banarasi canon. Woven on the banks of the Ganga in Varanasi, it pairs the open, airy weave of georgette with the taut discipline of katan silk, a yarn twisted so tightly it gives the fabric its signature drape and quiet resilience. Into this ground, the karigar has laid stylised paisleys, that enduring boteh form carried into Mughal court ateliers from Persia and never quite relinquished. The russet-brown ground is no accident; it belongs to the ochre and terracotta vocabularies that Banaras returns to, season after season, with complete conviction.

to wear it,

How to style

Cut this fabric into an anarkali with a low-slung brocade belt and pair it with oxidised silver jhumkas for a Diwali gathering that reads as considered rather than costumed. For a daytime aesthetic, a straight-cut kurta over wide-legged silk trousers works beautifully, anchored with block-printed dupatta in ivory. Alternatively, approach the fabric as a saree in the works: draped Gujarati-style with a contrast blouse in raw tussar, finished with antique gold kolhapuris. The russet tone flatters both warm and cool complexions and carries well into evening under candlelight.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure katan georgette rewards patience. Dry-clean for the first wash to preserve the woven motifs and dimensional texture inherent to twisted-silk construction. If washing at home, submerge briefly in cold water with a few drops of mild, pH-neutral liquid, never wring or agitate. Roll in a clean cotton towel to remove moisture, then hang in shade. Iron on the lowest silk setting, always on the reverse, with a pressing cloth between iron and fabric. Store folded in soft muslin, away from direct light, and refold along different lines every few months to protect the weave from permanent creasing.
