about the piece,

Description

There is a quietness to this ruby-wine cotton that speaks before you do. Woven in the Venkatagiri tradition of Andhra Pradesh, this sari carries the hallmark finesse that has made the region's cotton weaves beloved across generations of discerning wearers. The fabric is pure cotton, characteristically fine and almost paper-thin in hand, allowing it to drape with an effortless, liquid fall that heavier weaves rarely achieve. Slender pin-stripes run the length of the body in disciplined rhythm, while the woven border anchors the sari with quiet authority, its structure a testament to the loom's precision rather than embellishment. The deep ruby-wine ground, warm without being loud, makes this equally suited to a cultural afternoon, a family gathering, or the kind of occasion where one wishes to be remembered for taste rather than spectacle. Pair it with a contrast ivory or pale gold blouse to let the border read clearly against the body. A simple antique gold necklace and unembellished kolhapuris would complete the look with the restraint the fabric deserves.

the story,

Behind this piece

Venkatagiri, a small weaving town in Andhra Pradesh's Nellore district, has quietly produced some of the finest cotton and silk saris in peninsular India for over three centuries. Patronised historically by the Venkatagiri zamindars, the weave is celebrated for its gossamer lightness and disciplined geometry. This ruby-wine cotton carries both signatures: the precise pin-striped body woven on a pit loom, and the structured border that frames it with quiet authority. The tradition belongs to the Padmasali weaver community, whose mastery of fine counts gives Venkatagiri cotton its distinctive, almost breathable, drape.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this sari in a classic Nivi drape for a morning puja or a daytime cultural gathering, paired with a sleeveless raw-silk blouse in ivory or deep gold. For a literary festival or heritage museum event, choose a full-sleeve blouse in cream chanderi and flat Kolhapuri sandals. On a festive evening, elevate it with a zardozi-trimmed blouse, oxidised silver jhumkas from Rajasthan, and a potli bag in complementary wine brocade. The pin-striped body rewards simple styling; let the woven border do its quiet, architectural work.

to last,

Fabric & care

Hand-wash this pure cotton sari in cold water with a gentle, pH-neutral detergent. Do not soak for longer than five minutes, as prolonged soaking can weaken fine-count cotton fibres. Rinse thoroughly and never wring; press out water gently instead. Dry flat in shade to prevent the ruby-wine colour from fading unevenly. Iron on a medium cotton setting while slightly damp to restore the crisp drape. Store loosely folded in a clean muslin cloth, away from direct light and moisture. Refold along different lines each season to prevent permanent crease marks.

Each piece is hand-picked from artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Some are handloomed on traditional pit looms, others use block-printing, hand-embroidery, or heritage techniques passed down through generations. Small irregularities are part of the character — not a defect.
