the story,

Behind this piece

Paithani is among the oldest woven traditions of the Deccan, its origins traced to the ancient town of Paithan on the banks of the Godavari in Maharashtra. Woven by communities of hereditary silk weavers in and around Yeola, each saree is constructed on a handloom using pure mulberry silk and real zari. The peacock motif on this royal-blue anchal is not decorative whimsy; it is a centuries-old iconographic choice, tied to courtly aesthetics of the Peshwa era. The oblique interlocking of weft threads gives Paithani its distinctive, jewel-like tapestry weight and reversible lustre.

to wear it,

How to style

For a wedding reception, pair this royal-blue Paithani with a full-sleeved raw-silk blouse in deep teal or antique gold, and finish with polki or thewa jewellery from Rajasthan. For a festive family gathering, a short-sleeved brocade blouse in ivory keeps the saree central. For a formal cultural event, drape it in the traditional Nauvari Maharashtrian style and wear kolhapuri heels in tan leather, adding a single gold nath. In all three contexts, keep jewellery restrained so the hand-woven peacock anchal remains the uncontested focal point of the silhouette.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure silk Paithani should never be machine-washed. Hand-wash gently in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral shampoo or silk-specific cleanser, working in one direction only to protect the zari threads. Do not wring or twist; press moisture out carefully between clean cotton towels. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which yellows silk over time. Iron on a low silk setting with a pressing cloth between iron and fabric. Store folded in soft muslin, not plastic, and refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease damage.
