the story,

Behind this piece

Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aari, which Kashmiri craftsmen have wielded for centuries across the Dal Lake valley and the old mohallas of Srinagar. Distinct from the chain-stitch tradition of Lucknow, Kashmiri aari work builds dense floral motifs from the ground up, each petal formed by looping silk thread through taut fabric in swift, rhythmic pulls. On this rose-red cotton, the florals bloom in the unhurried manner of a garden coming into season, carrying the aesthetic vocabulary of the valley's long and storied textile culture.

to wear it,

How to style

For a daytime occasion, pair the stitched fabric, once tailored, with wide-leg cotton trousers in ivory and Kolhapuri chappals in tan leather. For a festive gathering, choose a flared palazzo in deep burgundy and finish with silver jhumkas from Rajasthan. A third reading is entirely contemporary: a straight-cut kurta worn over slim cigarette pants in off-white, with block-printed dupatta and tan leather mules. The rose-red ground reads as bold but carries grace; it needs no gilded accessories, only the restraint of well-chosen separates to let the embroidery speak for itself.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure cotton breathes well but rewards careful handling. Hand-wash this fabric in cool water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, and never wring or twist it, as the aari embroidery threads can distort under pressure. Rinse thoroughly, then lay flat on a clean cotton towel to dry in shade away from direct sunlight, which may fade the rose ground over time. Press on a low-heat setting, always from the reverse side, placing a thin cloth between iron and embroidery. Store folded in clean cotton muslin rather than plastic to allow the fibre to breathe.
