the story,

Behind this piece

Banaras has woven silk for over five centuries, and the Meenakari tradition within it is among the most demanding a weaver can undertake. Drawn from the Persian art of enamelling, Meenakari brocade translates jeweller's colour into weft: each tonal shift in the floral jaal requires a deliberate re-threading of the loom. The zari used in Varanasi's finest work is pure silver wrapped in gold, oxidised gently over decades into its characteristic warmth. A continuous all-over jaal, as seen here, demands sustained tension across the full width of silk, making each metre a considered act of precision.

to wear it,

How to style

For a winter wedding, pair with a raw-silk or velvet full-sleeved blouse in a tone drawn from the jaal's deepest colour, and finish with polki or Kundan jewellery rather than anything overly bright. An evening cultural programme calls for a lighter crepe blouse and low gold kolhapuris. For a formal festive lunch, drape in the Gujarati seedha pallu style, add a single strand of uncut diamonds, and carry a potli in complementary brocade. The saree's structured weight holds a nivi drape exceptionally well across all three occasions.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure silk is a protein fibre that weakens in water and sunlight equally. Dry-clean only; never hand-wash, as agitation distorts zari threads and can cause the silk base to pucker permanently. After wearing, air the saree in shade for thirty minutes before folding. Store wrapped in a soft muslin cloth, never plastic, and refold along different lines every three months to prevent permanent creasing. A small sachet of dried neem leaves discourages insects without the chemical residue that mothballs leave on zari. With this care, the silk and brocade will remain intact for generations.
