Behind this piece
Banaras has woven silk for over five centuries, its looms fed by the Ganga's humid air and the steady hands of Muslim weaver families who carry their craft in memory as much as in thread. This fabric comes from the Kasim family of Varanasi, inheritors of a tradition rooted in Mughal-era court patronage, where brocade was currency and status both. The red ground deepens the merriment of the floral motifs, each bloom lifted by zari-like supplementary weft threads into something closer to relief than flat cloth. This is Banarasi silk in full, unhurried voice.
How to style
Cut this fabric into a structured anarkali or a wide-legged palazzo suit for a wedding reception where you wish to be remembered rather than noticed. Pair it with uncut diamond or polki earrings to honour the fabric's own opulence without competing with it. For a festive puja or a mehendi afternoon, a short blouse and a pleated skirt in this brocade, worn with gold juttis, carries exactly the right weight of occasion. If you are skilled with draping, a Banarasi silk sari in this fabric calls for a simple Kanjivaram or tissue silk blouse to let the brocade carry the conversation.
Fabric & care
Pure silk brocade is a living fibre and asks for patience. Dry-clean this fabric for the first wash; thereafter, if you choose to hand-wash, use cold water and a gentle, pH-neutral detergent, never wringing or twisting the cloth. Keep it away from direct sunlight, which dulls the red and weakens the silk over time. Store folded in a clean, unbleached muslin cloth, not a plastic bag, which traps moisture and encourages mildew. Refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease lines. Treated with care, Banarasi silk lasts generations.
