Behind this piece
Varanasi has woven silk for over five centuries, and the tradition of Banarasi brocade carries within it the memory of Mughal patronage, Persian motifs, and the quiet persistence of karigars working jacquard and pit looms along the ghats. The paisley, known in Urdu as keri, arrived through trade routes from Kashmir and settled permanently into the Banarasi vocabulary. Here, rendered in hand-woven silk, it moves with the fabric rather than sitting upon it. This red ground is not merely festive; it is the colour that generations of brides, poets, and patrons have trusted to mean something enduring.
How to style
For a wedding or a mehendi gathering, cut this fabric into a structured lehenga and pair it with a sheer organza dupatta in ivory. Let the red speak; keep jewellery limited to uncut polki or temple gold. For a daytime reception, consider a wide-leg silk pant with a short anarkali kurta tailored from the same cloth. Evening calls for a wrap-style blouse cut on the bias, worn with a pre-draped saree silhouette. Ground each look with block-heeled mojris in tan or antique gold, and resist the urge to over-accessorise this fabric rarely needs assistance.
Fabric & care
Silk of this weight and weave rewards patience. Dry clean for the first few wears to preserve the integrity of the hand-woven structure and the tension of the weft threads. If washing at home becomes necessary, use cold water and a capful of mild, pH-neutral liquid, never wringing or twisting the cloth. Lay flat in shade to dry. Store folded in a pure cotton muslin cloth, never plastic, and refold along different lines each season to prevent permanent crease marks. A cedar block nearby discourages moths without the harshness of chemical repellents.
